    This essay was published in Arnold Bennett’s first series of Things That Have Interested Me (1921). The collection also includes essays about opera, football, ‘sex equality’, Henry James and many, many other topics. Although the title of this piece suggests a narrow and mundane topic, as so often with Bennett the familiar leads to the more profound.
